Health Science 1 is the first of four rigorous courses offered to students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. During this course, students are introduced to healthcare history, careers, law and ethics, cultural diversity, medical terminology and medical math, infection control, professionalism, communication, the basics of healthcare facilities and types of healthcare insurance. Students gain information on where health care has been, where it is going, and how professionalism and personal characteristics impact their success. The curriculum includes potential First Aid Certification. The skills and knowledge the students learn in Health Science 1 serve to prepare them to advance in all Health Science experiences.

Health Science 2 applies the knowledge and skills while further challenging the students to learn more detail about the field of healthcare. Students begin learning basic skill sets associated with the medical profession and how to evaluate data obtained from the skills. Students apply and demonstrate medical terminology and medical calculations. Students in this course should further their knowledge of healthcare careers and future goals by participating in a job shadowing experience. The curriculum includes certification in CPR through the American Heart Association. This course provides a foundation for further advancement in Health Science. The course is based on HealthCenter21 curriculum and meets the National Consortium of Health Science Education Standards.
Human Structure, Function, and Disease Honors 555201HW

Prerequisite: Per SCDE, Health Science 1 or Sports Medicine 1 with a grade of 75 or higher
Human Structure, Function, and Disease focuses on the human body and disease. Students gain knowledge of all human body systems and how they work and the relationship that they have with disease from the healthcare point of view. This course emphasizes the study of disease, prevention, and treatment (Pathophysiology).
Students participate in teamwork activities for assigned projects. Medical Terminology is incorporated throughout the course. Skills in Health Science 2 are reinforced as each body system is studied.
Health Science Clinical Study: CNA— Honors 556000HD
Grade 12 2 units
Prerequisite: Health Science 1, 2 & Human Structure, Function, and Disease (may be substituted with Project Lead the Way Human Body Systems, Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology or AP Biology), and completion of application for screening process.
Industry Credential Alignment: CNA, CPR
Recommended: Grade of 75 or better in Health Science 2 and Human Structure, Function, and Disease, or the substitution courses.
Requirement: Documented negative tuberculin skin test annually or documented negative two-step. Documentation verifying three hepatitis B vaccinations or signed declination; two measles, mumps, rubella vaccinations; two varicella (chicken pox) vaccinations or serological immune status for rubella, rubeola, mumps and varicella. Prior to clinical rotation, students will be responsible for background check and drug screening. Students must provide transportation to healthcare facilities.
A certified nursing assistant provides patient support for a variety of daily care tasks including nutrition services, transport, hygiene, mobility, and data collection. This course is designed to give students an opportunity to gain clinical experience. A combination of classroom instruction and work based experiences are used to prepare students for post-secondary education or employment in the health-care field. Students complete the development of their personal career portfolio and resumé. The students apply theory and skills to act ethically and within legal boundaries, communicate and relate to co-workers and patients, think critically and solve problems, and provide safe, effective care to patients in clinical areas such as hospitals, doctors’ offices and long term care facilities. Recertification in American Heart Association CPR is included. Students are given at least 80 hours of classroom instruction and 20 hours of laboratory time.
The students access iCEV online programs for beginning instruction for preparation of laboratory skills. The curriculum is based on the National Consortium of Health Science Education Standards. **Beginning 26-27 Medical Terminology will be the required third prerequisite course (along with Health Science 1 & 2) for Medical Assisting.

Medical Terminology Honors 554000HW

Medical Terminology is designed to develop students’ working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots and abbreviations. By relating terms to body systems, students learn the appropriate use of terms that are used in the medical environment. Medical Terminology may be used as an exemption for Health Science 3.
Pharmacology for Medical Careers- 557002CW

Industry Credential Alignment: Pharmacy Technician Certification
Pharmacology for Medical Careers is a program designed for students interested in a medical career. The course introduces students to basic terminology, medications and their actions, laws affecting medication prescription, medical calculations, and basic operations of a pharmacy. Students are required to purchase access to the internet based program. Students will be eligible to take the Pharmacy Tech Certification exam after graduation. The Pharmacy Technician Board Exam fees are the responsibility of the student.
